Quito Mint
1 Real 1833 GJ
Superb UNIQUE Specimen Known
![]()
There are two Die Varieties easily distinguishable among the 1 Real coins struck at the Quito Mint in 1833. Due to their characteristics, they could be referred to as “numismatic varieties”. We have named them as “Variety A” and “Variety B”. These are genuine, and differences in their dies can be easily appreciated.
We need to recognize that there are also other die varieties with slight differences among these two main varieties “A” and “B”. Though, they cannot be referred to as “varieties”.
Two specimens for varieties “A” and “B” are shown in this photographic presentation. We had the need to include a third piece disclosed by Ecuadorian numismatist Eduardo Carrión Letort, who authored the book “Monedas Ecuatorianas”, Quito, 1997. Mr. Letort erroneously attributes this coin as an “interesting variety of the Real of 1833”. This is undoubtedly a FAKE specimen to us, thirty years closely studying the Ecuadorian Coinage as professional numismatists endorse this statement.
The general context of Mr. Letort’s coin is coarse. The squalid birds shown over the mountains of Quito look more like flamingos from the Hialeah horse-track (Miami) than the majestic Condors from the South American Andes they tend to imitate.
Finally, we have included a fourth picture. This is a new and authentic Variety of the Quito Real of 1833 that we are pleased to present to our fellow numismatists.
We have named it as the “Condor Pigeon”. Undoubtedly this is a Condor Pigeon showing its wings in movement and its bill wide open, facing towards the majestic Equatorial Sun.
This coin will certainly enrich the Ecuadorian Numismatic, we expect its appearance will raise controversy but at the same time will delight several colleagues dedicated to the serious numismatic study.
It is necessary to underline that I never agreed with the Ecuadorian Legislators of 1833 and Mr. Letort, when they call eagles instead of condors to the birds portrayed in Ecuadorian pre-decimal coins. Notwithstanding the Decree of 1833 mentions Eagles as part of the design, this error was corrected in 1836 by the same Legislative body to what really is. There are Condors and not Eagles reigning in the Andean skies.
