527 pp. A classic reference work; photos are shown for the majority of the coins. Many coins labeled as to "die 1", "die 2", etc. Pages 194-205 dedicated to Ecuador. The main unique characteristic of this book from a modern point of view is its die information.

by U.S. government mints and private mints. The catalog numbers correspond
with those in Yeoman. For Ecuador, particularly useful for its description
of the private Providence Mint and the revelation that it produced the
1919 5 and 10 centavos coins.]

-
Type 3: 1 Sucre 1884-1897.

Fiero, David B. "Post colonial Ecuador coins threaten [sic.] by 'moneda feble'"
. World Coin News, Vol. 27, No. 3. March 2000. Krause Publications, pp. 26, 28, 30, 32. Comments by Fiero on what struck him
as most interesting while reviewing an advance copy of Michael Anderson's Numismatic History
of Ecuador. Focuses on the struggle of the Quito Mint to establish itself after the country's
independence, the inability of the Mint to get sufficient starting capital to allow it to
later become self-sufficient, the tendency to debase the country's coinage, and the personal sacrifices of the then mint director William Jameson.
Harris, Robert P.. A Guide Book of Modern
Latin American Coins. 1966. Whitman Publishing Company: Racine, Wisconsin.
125 pp. [Introduction; Mints and Mint Marks; Physical and Statistical Data;
A Short History of Latin America; Country-by-Country Descriptions (3 pages
devoted to Ecuador); Numismatics in Latin America; Bibliography. This book
is mainly useful for its information on the mints for some of the coins,
information on a 1965 melting of Ecuadorian coins, and its comments on
the earlier coinage being the most interesting.]
Below are reproduced the main text paragaphs on Ecuador:
p. 63: "Coins were minted at Quito during the period 1833 to 1862. All
coins listed below were produced at various mints outside Ecuador. Mints
shown in paraenthesis are not indicated by the mint name on the
coin. Other coins struck at Birmingham, Lima, México, Philadelphia,
and Santiago usually have the mint name spelled out in full or abbreviated
such as: HEATON, BIRMINGHAM, BIRMM, PHILADELPHIA,
PHILA. U.S.A., and SANTIAGO CHILE."
p. 65: "Early in 1965 the Spiral Metal Co. of South Amboy, New Jersey,
U.S.A. refined 55 tons of Ecuadorean silver coin. This had been requested
because the silver content was worth twice the face value of the coins.
A large number of the melted coins were the 5 Sucres of 1943 and 1944.
Despite the large numbers melted this coin is still quite common, and the
value of those remaining has not been affected by those lost through melting."
p. 120-121: "All of Ecuador's coinage covered by this Guide Book was
produced abroad and excellent documentation exists. The earlier silver
coins produced locally are far more interesting than the prosaic coinage
of later years. There are several collectors and a numismatic society in
the country."

information on dealers in Quito and numismatic tourist attractions.]

a guide to "the world's most popular coins", does not include a single Ecuador coin. However,
the list they present near the beginning of the book of foreign coins minted by US government
mints does include a list of the Ecuador coins minted by the Philadelphia and Denver mints.

NASCA (Numismatic and Antiquarian Service Corporation of America).
The Wayte Raymond Sale--Part IV. Public Auction Sale December 8, 1978.
With Prices Realized. There are five Ecuador lots listed, the first being an apparently
unique error variety:
- 3837: 1835. 1 Doblon = 2 Escudos. Quito mint, assayer G.J. Fr. 1, Cr. 5. The "D" of the value is inverted. Reportedly unique. Fine. (Photo) ($3,000-Up)
Bust of Liberty/Two mountains, a bird on each peak, sunface above. 6.38 gms. Several small digs or scratches. Our research reveals no information about this important variety.
-
3838: 1842-1942. Lot of 34 coins, including silver. Mostly average with a number in Unc. ($100-Up) 1) 1842. 4 Reales. Y.5. VF; 2) 1847. 2 Reales. Y.10. Abt. VF; 3) 1893. Decimo. Y.31. Unc.; 4) 1919. 10 Centavos. Y.40. Unc.
-
3839: The Rare 1846 8 Reales. 1846. 8 Reales. Y.12. Rarest coin of country. XF. (Photo) ($700-Up) Liberty head, similar to U.S. coins of the period/arms. A bit weak left-center reverse. Faintest lustre remains. One of the most important Latin American "crowns". Our estimate is based on Krause's price. This coin is so seldom offered for sale, and the condition is so nice, that we would be surprised to see it go for under $1000.
-
3840: Exceptional 1858 5 Francs. 1858 5 Francs. Y.13. Choice Au. (Photo) ($450-Up) Capped female bust/arms. Nicely toned, some central details not struck sharply. Very slight obverse cabinet friction. Krause $275 XF, but probably worth much more in that grade. This lot could reach the $1000-mark.
-
3841: 1892-1916. 2 Decimos. Silver, 900 Fine. Y.29. Grades to XF. 17 Pcs. ($30-Up)
Nesmith, Robert I.. Dig for Pirate Treasure. 1958. New
York: Bonanza Books. 302 pp., a few illustrations. Deals with treasure hunting; primarily
descriptions of pirates and attempts to recover sunken treaure. Pages 176-177 mention several
wrecks off of Ecuador for which at the time there were plans to attempt salvage in the near
future.
Obojski, Robert. "A Numismatic Visit to Quito
and Guayaquil, Ecuador" . World Coins Magazine, April 1975. Sidney,
Ohio. pp. 30, 31, 34, 36. [Interesting for its comments on how Ecuador's
economy was ' prospering' at the time. Also mentions locations of good
numismatic exhibits, comments on the price of gold and most popular gold
coin in Ecuador, and discusses the Ecuador gold coin featured in Moby Dick. Click here to view this information in a
new window.]]
Paz y Mino, Isabel. "La Historia del Ecuador en Monedas". Vistazo,
Sept. 3 1982. pp. 44-50. [An extensive description of the most important
numismatic collection in the country at the time, pertaining to an Antionio
Carrillo Bucheli, focusing on early coins and the history that surrounds
them, from prehistory through the 1800's. Also some interesting information
on the Galapagos coins with photos. We also learn that the collector prefers
collecting coins to collecting women, because the women are more expensive.][Vistazo
is one of the most popular magazines in Ecuador. After a friend gave me
a photocopy of this article during a visit to Cuenca, I went to the local
antique shop with the biggest clutter of old magazines and spent several
hours going through them until I was able to find the original magazine
the article comes from.]
Potter, Ken. The Variety Collectors' Listing
of World Doubled Dies. 1994. 23 pp. Unillustrated listing of 620 varieties
listed by Lou Coles in his World Doubled Die File that he administered
from the mid-1980s to 1992. The only Ecuador coin listed is an 1894/89
strong overdate 2 Décimos.
Raymond, Wayte. The Silver Dollars of North and South America.
Second Edition 1964. 125 pp. Contains three pages on Ecuador, containing obverse and reverse photos
and description of the following four high-demomination coins: 8 Reales 1846; 5 Francs 1858; 1 Sucre 1884-1897, 5 Sucres 1943-1944 (for these last two, the only price information given is one general price for this type of coin, not specified for the year). This book does not seem to contain any information that is not found in more detail elsewhere.
Sebring, Thomas H. "'Capitana' treasures lost and found three times"
. World Coin News, Vol. 27, No. 3. March 2000. Krause Publications, pp. 12, 14, 18. Describes
a Spanish treasure ship which sank off the coast of Ecuador in 1654 and the various attempts to
salvage its cargo, most of which was illegially being smuggled (not registered with the crown).

Seppa, Dale. The Coins of Ecuador 1833-1969.
1st ed. 1969. [Seppa later came out with a second edition of the book (see
below). But there is some useful information that did not make it into
the second edition, such as: table showing the grading terms used in the
USA, Spanish America and Spain; brief history of Ecuador and Ecuadorian
coinage including a discussion of various countermarks (the well-known
AG countermark plus others that are not mentioned in any other reference);
brief geographical description of Ecuador showing the changes in her area
after various historical treaties; different photos from those presented
in the later edition and mention of his references for some of the controversial
coins; discussion of counterfeit 10 and 25 sucres gold coins; and brief
biography of General Antonio José de Sucre.]
Seppa, Dale, & Michael Anderson. The Coins of Ecuador, 2nd ed.
1973. [The prices are now out of date, but the book still has some useful
information, such as photos of the three varieties of the 1919 5 centavos,
information on coins with edge inscriptions going in both directions, enlargements
of some lettering variations, and information on some coins that may be
found in medal rotation.]

. Santiago de Chile, 1917. Reprinted 1973; Quarterman. 340 pages. [This book is listed in the bibliography of every major work on Ecuadorian medals. Rulau, Russell. Latin American Tokens: A
Guide Book and Catalog 1700-1920. Softcover. The only book in the English language to catalog
tokens of all Latin America, includes those bearing the English, French,
Spanish and Portuguese languages; pricing in four condition grades.
(The below description comes from the Amazon.com web page for the second edition of the book.)
Thousands of tokens mostly workplace tallies were once issued throughout Latin America. Modern collectors treasure these items, but identification and valuation can be a challenge. Now, in one English-language volume, collectors and dealers will find all the information they need to assist them in their token collecting from the Mexican border to the southern tip of South America. Retail prices in up to four grades of condition, thousands of clear photographs, background notes and a comprehensive index make attributing these tokens a snap for those unfamiliar with the languages of Latin America.
The catalog covers the period of haciendas, mines, mills and docks from 1700 to 1920 for most of Latin America, and up to 1960 for the West Indies. Expanded considerably from the first edition and featuring completely revised pricing, this volume is the essential guide to profitable token collecting.
-Retail prices in up to four condition grades.
-Thousands of photographs.

Beresiner, Yasha. "A Banking History of Ecuador."
The Numismatist: March 1982. pp. 606-619. [A condensed, easy to read summary
in English of the banking history of the country, focusing on the various
note-producing banks during the time before the creation of the Banco Central.
However, probably does not include any information not available from other
sources, such as Carbo's Historia Monetaria y Cambiaria del Ecuador.
Also contains several typographical errors: supposedly Ecuador became independent
in 1920, the designs for the notes of the Banco del Azuay were adapted
from
those of the Banco Central, and Carbo's book is Historia Monetaria y Cambiara
del Ecuador.]

printed banknotes for Ecuador as well as printing methods used, etc.]

Estrada, Víctor Emilio. Moneda y Bancos en el Ecuador. 1982. 412 pp. Quito: Corporación Editora Nacional. Biblioteca Básica del Pensamiento Ecuatoriana #17.
Review (by Dale Seppa):
"Reissue of 1925 edition with Introductory Study by Rene Benzlcazar and preliminary notes and revision of the original by Julio Estrada Ycaza. Printed in Quito, Ecuador by Banco Central de Ecuador, 1982. 412 pp, bibliography, notes, soft covers.
This book is primarily an economic work as opposed to a numismatic or notaphilic work, but will have much of interest to the serious numismatist or notaphile. Careful attention to detail in the body of the work make it an important research tool.
This is a reissue of a work originally published in 1925. It is considered by many Ecuadorian authorities to be the classic explanation of the inflation and economic backwardness which severely affected the country from 1914 until the writing of the book in 1925.
It was written at a time when the general public believed that the aforementioned poor economic times had been caused by the Moritorium of 1914 which had suspended free monetary convertibility and prohibited the exportation of gold. This general belief was of such power that it is generally credited with being one of the principal reasons for the successful revolution of 1925 and the installation of the new government. Estrada handily proves that the cause is more easily attributed to massive international commercial dislocations caused by World War I, and a serious attempt on the part of the United States to raise the price of gold.
Numerous examples of actual exchange rates prevailing at that time, private bank closings and the change from silver to nickel coinage will make this book of use to the serious numismatist, notaphile, scholar, or historian as well as the economist."

Hoyos, Melvin. 1998. 173 pp.,
including a 6-page bibliography and filled with glossy color photos of coins, banknotes,
presidents, etc.. Quito: Editorial El Conejo (econejo@ibm.net). ISBN: 9978-87-181-0. This
book is the most important Spanish-language numismatic history of Ecuador to come out since
Ortuño's out-of-print 1977 classic reference work. According to officials at the branch
of the Banco Central in Cuenca, Hoyos' research was funded by the Ecuadorian Central Bank,
which had the intention of publishing it. The book was distributed internally to central bank
officials under the name La Moneda Ecuatoriana a través de la historia but was
not published by them for the general public because Hoyos had already, without authorization,
published it through El Conejo.
Very complete, dealing with all periods, from Precolombian times through the Colonial period and the Republic. Highlights of the Precolombian treatment include photos of types
of seashells used as money. The colonial period includes a number of useful maps and tables such as a map showing European colonies in the new world, glossary of terms such as "dobloon" and "maravedi", chart of Spanish kings with important events during their rule, chart showing the dates of founding of Spanish mints in the new world, and discussion and color photos of the main types of colonial coins. The section on Gran Colombia is short but covers the main points.
The section of the book on predecimal Republican coinage stands out for the following: p. 67
timeline of the events of 1833 when the Quito mint started up; p. 68 discussion of errrors in
the 1/2 real coins (1/2 instead of M); p. 69 photo of a 1 real coin of the rare variety
"pichón cóndor", although the author does not mention this fact; p. 76
photos/discussion of officially sanctioned falsifications; p. 85 mention of the medal rotation
coins of 1850; p. 89 mention of a new law prohibiting the circulation of heavily worn coins;
p. 91 photos of the characteristics of the two distinct mintings of 4 reales coins from 1857;
p. 97 impressive color photo of the 50 francos coin, with discussion on the following page
arguing against those who would call this coin a falsification; and pp. 100-101 photos of and
discussion abouta variety of the 4 reales 1862 that has an "A" before the date.
The section of the book on decimal coinage makes the following important contributions: p. 118 photos
of 5 and 10 centavos 1919 coins with the comment that there are many varieties of both; pp. 144-145
discussion presenting the main theories about the "edición prohibida" of 1973 (2 and 5 sucre coins almost all of which
were melted by the government without entering circulation), pp. 156-159 with a list of the
haciendas known to have issued tokens; pp. 160-167 discussion of the Galapagos countermarked
coins with an interview with the son of Rogerio Alvarado; and pp. 168-173, extensive bibliography
including both books and an extensive list of other documents and newspaper articles.
This book is a necessary and worthwhile addition to any collection of numismatic information
on Ecuador. However, it it still leaves some questions unanswered. My requests for information
to be added in the next edition, or in the next Ecuadorian numismatic history that comes out,
would include the following: PREDECIMAL 1) discussion of the 1833 pichón cóndor
variety of the 1 real, and of additional varieties of the predecimal coins in general; DECIMAL
1) discussion of the two varieties of the 1893 1/2 décomo that have been reported; 2)
information on countermarks found on decimal coinage other than the galapagos countermarks,
such as the star countermark; 3) information on the place of coinage of the coins that do not
bear a mint mark; 4) information on the last 1-sucre issue, which occurred in 1988 and 1990 and
possibly also 1992; TOKENS expanded section with more photos/information on old tokens, and
including some modern tokens.

Ortiz, Gonzalo.
2000. Quito: Editorial Abya Yala. 89 pp. Based on articles published by Mr. Ortiz in the magazine
Gestión that have been revised and expanded. A nontechnical description of the state of
the country at the beginning and closing of the century and in between, which covers the
following areas: population, exports, infrastructure, economic policy and financing, and
social changes. The following review in Spanish is from El Tiempo, Cuenca daily newspaper,
1/21/2001:

-
Drake, Paul W. The Money Doctor in the Andes: The Kemmerer Missions, 1923-1933. Hardcover, 335 pp. Durham: Duke University Press. ISBN: 0822308800. The below reviews are from the BarnesAndNoble.com web site:
"Edwin W. Kemmerer was one of the first US economic advisors to Latin America (and to China and Poland). . . . His team missions to Colombia, Chile,Bolivia, Peru, and Ecuador were instrumental in the creation of central banksin the region and for the modernization of their fiscal systems. Drake . . .{examines} the sociohistorical circumstances creating the need for outside advisors with the socioeconomic consequences of the reforms the Kemmerer missions introduced." (Choice) Index.
From J.L. Dietz - Choice
The historical research is impeccable, though economists may find themselves wishing for more specific details concerning the reforms themselves. Drake's most compelling point about the missions is their 'export' content. Domestic elites wanted and implemented the proposals of the Kemmerer missions because doing so lent their governments greater credibility on international financial markets. . . . Drake provides convincing evidence that rather than being agents of external intervention, the Kemmerer missions and the reforms they fostered are better understood as part of the internal struggle among elites in Latin America for control and power.
From Robert N. Seidel - The American Historical Review
An effective monograph, Paul W. Drake's account examines the impact of one of the most successful American foreign advisers of all time. . . . Drake advances dependency thinking about international economic relations. He demonstrates that 'structural change occurred (in the Andean states) within a dependent context' of U.S. hegemony. Although the book does not provide an edge likely to advance research in economic theory, it illuminates, in chapters on eachof the Andean countries, the complexity of the powers involved.
From Elizabeth A. Cobbs - Business History Review
Drake's work is remarkably comprehensive in its coverage of five nations and their complex responses to Kemmerer, the United States, and the challengesof survival and development. A curious weakness of the book is its lack of attention to Kemmerer himself (barely two pages). Who was that masked man, the'money doctor in the Andes'? What were his motives, ulterior or otherwise? Yet this book offers so much that one hesitates to complain. {It} will be required reading for business historians and others concerned with the origins ofdebt-led development, United States-Latin American relations in the 1920s, banking in the Americas, dependency theory, and the modern history of the Andeanrepublics.

Review on Back Cover:
León Camacho, Galo Salvador Gordillo, Carlos Larrea Maldonado, Jorge Trujillo, Luis
Tobar Ribadeneira, Lucy Ruiz, Simón Pachano, Fernando Carrión, Ramón

Benalcázar R., René. Análisis del Desarrollo Económico del
Ecuador.. 1989. Primera Edición. 533 pp. Quito: Ediciones Banco Central del Ecuador.
Review from the inside front and back covers:

Hey, Jeanne A.K. Theories of Dependent Foreign Policy and the Case of Ecuador in the 1980s.
1995. 308 pp. ISBN 0-89680-184-5. Latin American Series Number 23. Athens: Ohio University Center for International Studies.
Review from the back cover:
"How do economic weakness and dependence influence foreign policy decisions and behavior in third
world countries? Theories in Dependent Foreign Policy examines six foreign policy
theories: compliance, consensus, counterdependence, realism, leader preferences, and domesstic
politics, and each is applied to a series of case studies of Ecuador's foreign policy during
the 1980s under two regimes: Osvaldo Hurtado (1981-1984) and his successor León Febres
Cordero (1984-1988).
Hey shows that Ecuador during this period represented the third world in many ways. It was a
new democracy, having just emerged from years of military rule, extremely indebted to the West,
and dependent upon a primary product export economy that relied heavily on importers, especially
the United States.
Jeanne Hey finds that some of the most popular and enduring theories in western research, such
as realism and compliance, poorly account for Ecuadorian foreign policy. She explains that
poor countries like Eucador have substantial foreign policy latitude in the diplomatic arena,
while they are more constrained in the economic area. Drawing on archival research and
interviews with policy makers including Presidents Hurtado and Febres Cordero, Dr. Hey
convincingly argues that many of the traditional foreign policy theories do not 'fit' dependent
states, and inadequately account for the complexity of foreign policy in the third world."

Ecuador 1927-1987. 1990. 157 pp. Biblioteca de la Historia Económica 3. ISBN:
9978-72-184-3. Quito: Ediciones del Banco Central del Ecuador.
Review from the back cover:

1996. Estudio introductorio y selección de textos: Wilson Miño Grijalva. 678 pp.
Biblioteca Básica del Pensamiento Ecuatoriano XL. ISBN 9978-72-013-8
(Banco Central), or 9978-84-023-0 (Corporación Editora Nacional). Quito: Banco Central
del Ecuador & Corporación Editora Nacional.
Review from the back cover:

ISBN:
9978-72-008-1. Quito: Ediciones del Banco Central del Ecuador.
Review from the back cover:

Sierra, Enrique & Oswaldo Padilla. Ecuador: Políticas Financieras y de Convertibilidad.
1997.
293 pp. Quito: V&O gráficas. ISBN: 79-028-4. Review from the rear cover:
realidad nacional."

Viteri Díaz, Galo. Las políticas de ajuste, Ecuador 1982-1996:
Evaluación de resultados. 1998. Primera Edición. 216 pp. Serie Libros de Bolsillo 12. ISBN:
9978-84-243-8. Quito: Corporación Editora Nacional.
Review from the back cover:
producto interno bruto, inflación, empleo, salarios, exportaciones, finanzas
