QUITO, Feb 18 (Reuters) - Ecuador's banana exports rose 3.0 percent to 360,650 tonnes in January from 350,999 tonnes in January 1999 as plantations recovered from violent El Nino storms two years ago, the Agriculture Ministry said Friday.
But revenue from banana sales fell 15.2 percent in January to $77 million from $90 million in the same month of 1999, it added.
Ecuador, the world's top banana exporter, sold 3.9 million tonnes in 1999. The yellow fruit is Ecuador's second-biggest export, behind oil.
Experts say the nation's banana industry is facing a crisis due to falling prices and depressed markets.
